
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 when King James II of Scotland persuaded Pope Nicholas V to authorize Bishop William Turnbull of Glasgow to set up a university. It is the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world. The alumni of the famous university include economist and philosopher Adam Smith, the physicist Lord Kelvin, novelist Alistair MacLean, John Logie Baird, the pioneer of television and the initial First Minister of the Scottish Parliament, Donald Dewar.
